Website delivery and hosting
The website runs on a Hostinger VPS. Requests involve processing the IP address, requested URL, time, browser information and technical connection data. These are used to deliver pages, diagnose faults and prevent abuse. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, based on our legitimate interest in operating a secure and reliable editorial website.
Hostinger receives technical data as the hosting provider. Provider and processing information: Hostinger: Privacy policy · Hostinger: Data processing addendum
Technical logs and abuse prevention
The public Atlas proxy currently does not maintain a complete visitor access log. Technical errors may appear in size-limited service logs. The shared proxy retains at most three diagnostic log files of 10 MiB each. Records concerning a specific security incident may be needed longer to investigate and prevent abuse. They are not used to build advertising profiles.
Cookies and browser storage
Language selection uses the German or English URL and does not require a persistent language cookie. Images, fonts and regular page scripts are served by this website. We currently do not use advertising or Google Analytics cookies.
The public Atlas pages do not require sign-in and do not create a visitor profile in browser storage. Protected administration areas may use essential session cookies. Essential storage is based on section 25(2) TDDDG; further processing relies on Article 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR.
Email and contact
If you contact us, we process your email address, message and other information you choose to provide in order to answer your request. Email is handled by Microsoft 365 / Outlook, supplied through GoDaddy. Messages and technical delivery information are processed by those providers. Please provide only information necessary for your request.
The legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR for contract-related requests, otherwise Article 6(1)(f) GDPR to handle your communication. Retention follows the time needed to resolve the request; that purpose ends once the matter has been settled. Legally relevant correspondence is retained only where a specific statutory obligation or establishing or defending a legal claim requires it. GoDaddy: Privacy policy · Microsoft: Privacy statement
Administration accounts and moderated comments
Protected Atlas administration processes account details such as display name, email address, password hash or registered authentication keys, roles and session information. Public pages do not require registration. Where comments appear below an article, they come from the moderated comment store; the comment text and display name needed for the discussion may be public.
Article 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR provide the legal basis for account administration, editorial operation and moderation. Account data is needed while authorised access exists, and public comments while the discussion remains available. You may request deletion or anonymisation. Security and legal records are retained only while their specific purpose or a statutory obligation requires it.
External videos and links
An embedded video connects to its provider only after you explicitly choose to load it. The Atlas supports YouTube in privacy-enhanced mode. Loading may send the IP address, browser information and requested video page to the provider, which may use cookies or other browser storage. This is based on your consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR and section 25(1) TDDDG. You can remove a loaded video; this cannot recall data already sent.
External links, for example to Steam or a developer, open another website. Its processing begins when you visit it and is covered by that site’s privacy notice.
Editorial processing
Research and quality checks use editorial software and OpenAI / Codex to process source material and article drafts. Editorial processing relies on Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. OpenAI: Privacy policy
Recipients, transfers and backups
Access is limited to people operating the website or handling a specific task, and the service providers needed for those purposes. Depending on the provider, support case or external service you choose, processing may take place outside the European Economic Area, including in the USA. Provider documentation describes mechanisms including adequacy decisions and standard contractual clauses. We do not promise processing exclusively in Germany or Europe; you may request information about the applicable safeguards from the controller.
Technical databases and encrypted backups enable recovery. Backup copies have restricted access and are not used for routine analysis of reader reports or building visitor profiles. Deletions must be reapplied following a restore. Retention follows the recovery purpose; backups no longer needed must be deleted or replaced with current copies.
Your rights
Subject to the legal conditions, you may request access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing and data portability under Articles 15–20 GDPR. You may object to processing based on legitimate interests on grounds relating to your particular situation under Article 21 GDPR. Consent may be withdrawn at any time for future processing; this does not affect the lawfulness of earlier processing.
Contact lightnofireatlas@guided.news. You may also complain to a supervisory authority, particularly where you live, work or believe an infringement occurred, under Article 77 GDPR. For the controller located in Hamburg, the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information is an available contact: HmbBfDI
Voluntary information and decisions
Technical connection data is necessary to deliver the website. Contacting us, submitting a correction, commenting or having an account is not required to read public content. Without the information needed for a voluntary feature, that feature cannot be provided. Visitors are not subject to solely automated decisions producing legal or similarly significant effects.
VG WORT: measurement of article views
Selected news and guides contain an invisible VG WORT counter image. Loading it connects your browser to the METIS measurement server over HTTPS and sends the full article path. METIS uses a client ID and a session cookie to recognise repeated views within one session. According to VG WORT, IP addresses are processed only in anonymised form and no advertising profiles are created. The provider is Fifty5Blue Deutschland GmbH, Halbergstr. 4, 66121 Saarbrücken. Details: VG WORT: METIS integration guide, section 2.1.4.
